Shaking it up with EarthQuake Recycled

On April 19th we rocked the Fisch Haus with our fundraiser, EarthQuake Recycled, raising over $4,000 towards Aveda’s global goal to raise $6.5 million for clean water projects. The proceeds will be coordinated through Global Greengrants Fund, a non-profit that channels high-impact grants to grassroots groups working to solve pressing environmental problems.

The evening included refreshments from Wichita restaurants Tanya’s Soup Kitchen, Picasso’s Pizza, Cow and Sow Deli, and Rain Café and Lounge along with beer and wine provided by Jacobs Liquor and bartending services by Tanya’s Soup Kitchen.

The silent auction was fun and exciting, with lots of competitive bidding. Artists John Ernatt, Kent Thomas Williams, Charlotte Martin, Jessica Reyes and others donated artwork for the fundraiser.  Local businesses Hatman Jack’s, the Candle Club, GreenAcres Market, Beard’s Floral Design, Valley Wholesale, Lucinda’s and others provided fabulous prizes for top bidders.

Local earth and wellness vendors, including the Bluestem Acupuncture Clinic of Kansas, Lloyd’s Natural Honey, EarthWise Pet Supply, Wichita Rain Barrels, GreenAcres Market & Deli and Aveda were on hand with information and demonstrations on easy, earth-friendly ways to make changes to help care for ourselves and the planet.

We wrapped up the evening with a fashion show of clothing made from recycled materials and wigs made from shredded paper by our talented team and costumes from past ArtAID performances. Check our their work below.

Special thanks to our staff, models, Aveda, Fisch Haus, Holly Friend, Julia Cherney, Julian Bartlett and Jill D. Miller for all their help making this event a success!

Plump Your Hair Up

ThickeningTonicIf you struggle with thin, fine hair Aveda’s new Thickening Tonic is the answer to your prayers and the end to bad hair days! From the very first application, we’ve see immediate, incredible results. This styling spray increases the diameter of each individual hair strand, creating texture and volume from roots to ends for even the finest hair. Although the product has a lot of muscle, it doesn’t weigh the hair down.

This has quickly became Graham’s favorite new Aveda product. He told us, “It’s unbelievable! It actually doubles the hair shaft! Best Aveda product  in years!”

East to use, just spray the tonic from roots to ends after towel drying your hair. Comb through the hair to get the product distributed evenly and blow dry your hair to get the best results. See what all the excitement is about and ask your stylist to try it in your hair the next time you’re in.

The Story of Planet Hair

Here’s how we got our start!

Owners Tod, Linda & Graham

Owners Tod, Linda & Graham

In the beginning of 1992, Tod Ernst and Graham Ross began to imagine Planet Hair. With 24 years of combined experience, they felt they were ready to create a salon environment unique to Wichita.

Graham entered the salon industry because of his love of people and dreams of an exciting social life. With a natural ability with people, along with a strong entrepreneurial drive, Graham started his first business venture after four years as a stylist, Strands. . . A Salon, which he opened with two partners. After gaining some experience and growth as a business owner, Graham started dreaming of his vision of the perfect salon.

Tod is a creative visionary, drawn to the exciting, fast paced lifestyle of the fashion industry. While working at the Hair Force, he developed his creative niche in producing hair and make-up looks for theater, commercials, photo and catalog work, and his favorite outlet; fashion shows.  While working on his artistic and business abilities, Tod’s plan was to have his own business.

Graham and Tod, who had been friends for several years, started sharing their dreams with each other and discovered that their visions of the future were very compatible. As they became more excited about their vision and began to forge their plan, Linda Ernst, Tod’s wife, became an important part of making their dream a reality.

An artist herself, Linda had matured as a business person in the floral design business and was experienced in directing creative, service businesses.  Attracted to the operational aspects of the business, Linda joined the partnership and became the salon manager. She is the glue that holds the salon together.

It was their vision from the beginning to open a progressive salon downtown.  When Old Town was a ghost town, the partners looked at the space where Planet Hair is located today.  Sensing that the down town area was about to go through exciting growth, and ignoring people who warned them against it, the entrepreneurs took the risk and have never looked back. Along with the help of family, friends, and bankers, Planet Hair opened in November 1992.

Makeup Hacks

Makeup TipsQuick tips and tricks for makeup mastery!

Oops! Need an eraser?
Put a little moisturizer on the end of a Q-tip to wipe away that mascara smudge without having to retouch the rest of your makeup.

Smokey eyes without the mess!
Dust a generous amount of loose powder under your eye before putting on your smoky eye shadow. Any shadow that falls under your eye can easily be whisked away when you’re finished.

Want your lip color to last longer?
Use a lip definer pencil to shape the lips and color the lips in. Apply a lighter color with some gloss over the liner for color that stays and stays.

Instant face lift!
Define your brows and lift the eyes by using a little concealer directly under the brow.
Shadow can be applied over the concealer without losing definition.

Perfect nude lip
Get the perfect nude lip color by applying your foundation to the lips. Finish the look with a little clear gloss.

Running out of mascara?
Add three drops of saline solution or other eye drops to the mascara tube to stretch out your mascara for another week!

Trouble getting the perfect winged eyeliner?
Place a piece of tape in position, slanting up from under the eye, as a guideline to make the perfect line. Before placing the tape on your face, apply the tape to your shirt then pull it off. This make the adhesive less sticky so the rest of your makeup doesn’t come off on when the tape is removed.
